Midjourney is an AI-powered image generation system developed and operated by Midjourney, Inc., an independent research lab based in San Francisco. Founded in August 2021 by David Holz (previously co-founder of Leap Motion), the company has been profitable since its earliest days of public availability — a rare achievement in the AI industry — and has remained entirely self-funded, never taking external venture capital.

Midjourney combines a large language model with a proprietary diffusion model to translate natural language text prompts into high-quality visual imagery. Its training on massive curated datasets of images paired with text descriptions allows it to interpret nuanced aesthetic vocabulary, artistic styles, compositional directives, and technical photography terms to produce images that feel intentionally designed rather than algorithmically assembled.

The platform's original and defining interface is Discord: users interact via the /imagine command, which returns four image variations per prompt. With over 21 million members, it remains one of Discord's largest servers. Midjourney also launched a standalone web platform for structured generation and management.

Version 7, rolled out in early 2025, achieved a 40% reduction in anatomical errors (particularly hands and faces) and a 35% improvement in prompt understanding compared to V6. V7 also introduced Draft Mode, enabling 10x faster generation for rapid iteration. In June 2025, Midjourney launched its first video generation model (V1 Video), capable of animating static images into short clips.

Midjourney's image quality and aesthetic polish are widely considered the highest among commercial AI image generators, making it the dominant tool for concept artists, graphic designers, photographers, filmmakers, architects, and marketing professionals.
