Free AI Chat in 2026: What Each Free Plan Actually Lets You Do
Last updated: 2026-10-28 · Category cluster: Text Generation
“Free” is the easiest word on an AI pricing page and the hardest to pin down. One chatbot gives you unlimited messages but a context window a third the size of the paid one. One gives you everything except the model you actually wanted. One has no paid consumer plan at all, so free is simply what it is. One is free because it runs on your own laptop. And one is free while its parent company is in Chapter 11.
Every figure below was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 27–28 October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a number, this page says so rather than inventing one — and in chat, the missing number is almost always the message limit.
One caveat before the list: several of these pages price by region. We read them from Korea, so ChatGPT shows won and Claude's figures include 10% VAT. Where that matters, it is noted inline.
The short version
| Tool | What the free plan gives | The limit that matters |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Unlimited text chat on GPT-6 | 27K context on free vs 128K on Pro; uploads, voice, image generation and deep research all capped |
| Claude AI | Chat with web search, code execution, memory and Artifacts | Sonnet and Haiku only — Opus is paid |
| Gemini | Deep Research, image generation, Gemini Live, 15GB storage | Needs a Google Account; limits described as a multiple, never a number |
| DeepSeek | Web and mobile chat, no ads, no in-app purchases | No consumer plan exists at all, so no upgrade path |
| Mistral AI | Free chat tier at $0 | Pro features gated at $14.99/month |
| Ollama | Unlimited local models, free forever | You supply the hardware |
| LM Studio | Free desktop app, and free to use at work | You supply the hardware |
| Wrtn | Documented as chat without limits, without signing in | Korean-language interface |
| Perplexity AI | Everyday answers with a free account | Lower usage limits and limited Computer use |
| Character.ai | Free tier with ads | The company filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 |
Free, but nobody will tell you the limit
The three largest assistants all describe their free tier without a usable number, and each does it differently.
ChatGPT is the most specific and the most slippery. Its free plan costs nothing — ₩0 on the page we read — and promises “unlimited text chat” on GPT-6, with a footnote that anti-abuse limits apply to that word. Uploads, image generation, voice chat, deep research, memory and Codex are all marked limited, again without figures. The one number that is published is the useful one: the free context window is 27K tokens, roughly twelve pages of text, against 54K on Go and Plus and 128K on Pro. If your chats keep forgetting the start of a long document, that is the number explaining it.
Claude takes the opposite approach and publishes no numeric limit on free at all. What it does publish is the model list, which is the real boundary: on the comparison table, Opus is marked no for free and yes for every paid tier, while Sonnet and Haiku are yes everywhere. Free also includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations, connecting apps and tools, Artifacts, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Context runs up to 1M tokens depending on model. Paid is Pro and Max; the page we read from Korea showed Pro at $18 a month billed annually ($220 up front) or $22 month-to-month, which includes 10% VAT — the underlying figures are $17 and $20.
Gemini is free with a Google Account and includes Deep Research, image generation, Gemini Live and 15GB of storage. Google describes the paid tiers as 2× (AI Plus) and 4× (AI Pro) the free usage rather than as a cap, which tells you the ratio but never the base. On the US page AI Plus is $4.99 a month and AI Pro $19.99 with 5TB of storage.
If you want a limit you can plan around, none of these three will give you one. That is not an oversight; a published number is a promise, and usage-based services avoid making it.
Can you use any of them without an account?
This is the most common follow-up question and the honest answer is: mostly no, with one documented exception.
Gemini states it plainly — free requires a Google Account. Claude, Perplexity and Hugging Face all describe their free tiers as account-based. The large assistants treat the account as the product.
Wrtn is the exception we can point at. The vendor publishes no pricing page at all, markets the core service as free, and its help centre states that you can chat without limits on the web even without signing in. We loaded wrtn.ai logged out on 28 October 2026 and the composer was present alongside the sign-up and log-in buttons, which matches. The catch is language: the interface is Korean, so it is a real answer to “no sign-up” only if that works for you.
We have deliberately not tested the others by opening them logged out, because doing that properly needs a clean browser profile and doing it carelessly proves nothing. Where a vendor documents the requirement, we have quoted the vendor.
Free because there is no paid consumer plan
DeepSeek is the odd one out on this list. Its web and mobile chat are free, with no ads and no in-app purchases, and there is no consumer subscription tier to upgrade to. The company sells access through its API instead, billed per million tokens, with cache hits priced an order of magnitude below cache misses and a cheaper off-peak rate.
That makes DeepSeek the simplest recommendation on this page for someone who just wants to chat and never think about a plan again — and the least useful if you were hoping to pay for higher limits, because that door does not exist.
Free because it runs on your machine
Two tools are free in a way a subscription cannot be: the software runs locally and nothing leaves your computer.
Ollama runs models locally free and unlimited. Its cloud side has a pay-as-you-go tier that is also $0 with no subscription — you pay per token for cloud models, with three concurrent requests and no service fees — and a Pro plan at $20 a month, or $200 a year ($16.67 a month), which includes $60 of monthly usage credits.
LM Studio gives away its desktop app at $0 for running local LLMs, and there is one detail worth knowing: it is free for use at work. The separate commercial licence requirement was removed on 8 July 2025. The paid tiers cover the hosted side — Bionic+ at $20 a month for private US-hosted open-source models, and Pro at $100 a month.
The honest cost here is hardware and setup time. If you have a machine that can run a mid-sized model and a reason to keep conversations off third-party servers, this is the best value on the page. If you want to type a question in the next thirty seconds, it is not.
Free with something you should know first
Character.ai has a free tier with ads and a c.ai+ plan at $9.99 a month. It also announced on 12 October 2026 that it has initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to allow a court-supervised sale of the company. The platform was still operating when we checked on 28 October 2026 and its blog is still live. We are not predicting an outcome — but if you are about to invest hours building characters there, that is the fact to weigh first, and it is not on any comparison page we could find.
Grok is the one entry where we have to report a blank. The consumer subscription price is not published on the public site: grok.com shows only a sign-in screen, and x.ai blocks automated readers, so we could not verify the current SuperGrok tiers from the vendor. API pricing is published — $2.00 per million input tokens, $0.50 cached, $6.00 output — which tells you nothing about what a consumer pays. We would rather leave the field empty than repeat a figure from somewhere else.
What the free tier actually costs you
Across these ten tools, free costs you one of four things, and knowing which one you are paying makes the choice straightforward.
- Context. ChatGPT's free window is 27K against 128K on Pro. Long documents are where this bites.
- The best model. Claude's free tier covers Sonnet and Haiku; Opus is paid-only. The chat works, the ceiling is lower.
- Attention. Character.ai's free tier carries ads, and ChatGPT's mid-tier Go plan now states that it may include ads too — a change worth noticing on a plan people buy to escape limits.
- Your own hardware and time. Ollama and LM Studio charge nothing and ask for a GPU and an afternoon.
What free rarely costs any more is capability. Five years ago the free tier was a demo. In 2026 Claude's free plan executes code and searches the web, Gemini's runs Deep Research, and DeepSeek has no paid consumer tier to withhold anything for.
FAQ
What is the best free AI chatbot?
For general use with no setup, ChatGPT and Claude both give genuinely unlimited text chat on their free tiers; pick ChatGPT if you want the larger ecosystem and Claude if you want web search, code execution and Artifacts without paying. For never thinking about plans again, DeepSeek has no paid consumer tier at all. For privacy, Ollama or LM Studio on your own machine.
Is there a free AI chatbot with no sign-up?
Wrtn documents chat without limits on the web without signing in, and its logged-out page showed a working composer when we checked on 28 October 2026 — but the interface is Korean. The major English assistants all describe their free tiers as requiring an account.
Which free AI chat has the fewest limits?
Ollama and LM Studio, because the limit is your hardware rather than a plan. Among hosted services, DeepSeek is the only one on this page with no paid consumer tier to gate features behind.
Why does this page not list message limits?
Because the vendors do not publish them. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all describe free usage without a number — as “unlimited” with an anti-abuse footnote, as no stated limit, or as a multiple of an unstated base. We report what the pricing page says rather than guessing.
How current is this?
Every figure was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 27 or 28 October 2026. AI chat pricing moves faster than any other category we track — treat anything older than a few weeks, here or anywhere else, as unverified.
Picking one
If you have not got a preference yet, the shortest path is this. Want the fewest surprises? DeepSeek — there is no plan to get upsold into. Want the most capable free assistant? Claude for web search, code execution and Artifacts, or ChatGPT if you will hit the ecosystem more than the context limit. Want it on your own machine? LM Studio is the gentler start and it is free for work too.
